This kit is the 1/72 VF-31C Super Siegfried Mirage unit from the Macross Delta series. Just like the previously released VF-31J Super Siegfried Hayate unit, it's essentially the normal version bundled with the Super Pack. The Super Pack's molded color has been changed to match the purple color scheme of the Mirage unit.
The basic features are 100% identical to the VF-31C Super Siegfried Hayate unit, and the significance here is simply that the Mirage unit has now gotten the Super Siegfried treatment — there's nothing particularly new beyond that. It's still a kit where a stand is pretty much mandatory due to the added weight, and it requires a considerable amount of assembly and seal-applying grunt work.
The joint strength of the Siegfried body itself isn't really a problem, but the large Super Pack armaments mounted on the back make this kit a real headache in a number of ways. The center of gravity shifts way too far back and parts keep falling off, making it extremely difficult to get it standing on its own — but after a long struggle and with the indomitable spirit of a reviewer, I did manage to get the Battroid Mode standing upright for the photos. (Honestly, there was some serious frustration involved...)
Aside from the Battroid Mode, which is such a pain to get standing on its own, the other modes are fairly easy to display. And to its credit, the visual quality of this kit does make all the effort feel worthwhile.
Personally, I'm getting a bit tired of the VF-31 series at this point. On top of the assembly itself, the transformation process you have to go through repeatedly for review photos takes up a lot of time. In particular, the normal VF-31J Hayate unit I kept transforming over and over for comparison shots now has noticeably loose joints. No matter how clever the transformation mechanism is, it's probably not a good idea to transform these things too frequently.
Anyway, this kit represents Macross milking its lineup to the fullest, but it feels more meaningful as an item that expands the range to satisfy the diverse demands of fans. :-)
