VF-31F Siegfried + Lilldraken [Hayate Immelmann Use]

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

To commemorate the 2021 Macross Delta theatrical release, the VF-31F Siegfried + Lilldraken [Hayate Immelmann Use] was released. The contents are a combined kit of the VF-31F Siegfried [Messer Use] released in 2016 and the Lilldraken that was previously sold separately. The Hayate version was originally the VF-31J, but this time it's based on the VF-31F.

So all the features — transformation gimmicks, accessories, everything — are identical to the existing kit. Since even the molded colors are unchanged, with this kit you'll mainly want to check out how the two combine. For a more detailed look at the gimmicks and transformation process, please refer to the VF-31J Siegfried [Hayate Use] reviewand the Lilldraken + Missile Pod

for reference. That said, there is one part that was newly added with this combined release — two new joint parts for connecting the Siegfried's wings to the Lilldraken, which are newly tooled pieces.

And there's one critical issue... only waterslide decals are includedT_T Previous standard Macross kits came with both seals and decals, so even non-painters could work with them comfortably. The thing is, waterslide decals on a transforming kit are a real headache — without a topcoat, there's a good chance the decals will get damaged during transformation. So for this review, I skipped both panel lining and decals and just reviewed it as a straight build, so keep that in mind before buying.

On top of that, having the Lilldraken attached to the back throws the Battroid Mode's center of gravity severely rearward. It's manageable on a stand, but getting it to stand upright on its own is extremely difficult. I pushed through it with my reviewer's spirit and somehow got it standing for the shots, but I think I sweated for a good 30 minutes just trying to keep it upright. The ankle joints are already flimsy, the body doesn't hold its angles well in various spots, and the center of gravity is badly shifted to the rear — it felt like trying to stack 8 ping-pong balls vertically (-_-)

Anyway, this is essentially a bundle kit without much new to offer, and on top of that the seals have been dropped. It's still an exemplary transforming robot with an impressive transformation gimmick, but it feels like a kit best recommended for die-hard Macross Delta fans who are planning to paint it :-)
