The second MG Figure-rise release is, naturally (?), a color variant — Super Saiyan Son Gokou. You might have been hoping for Piccolo, Vegeta, or Frieza (or maybe Bulma..? ;;), but being early in the lineup, they're playing it safe and going with the easy route.
As expected, the basic structure is identical to Son Gokou, with only the exterior parts like the head and clothing changed, so every fundamental feature is 100% the same as the normal version Son Gokou. The swappable face system, hand configurations, included clear display stand — all of it is the same. One small difference is that since the Super Saiyan state is typically mid-battle, the seals/decals include a lot more damage expression markings.
Also, unlike the normal version, Super Saiyan Son Gokou has torn clothing details added throughout the pants. Rather than just punching holes in the outfit, skin-colored parts are provided on the inside so the flesh underneath shows through each tear. It feels like a charming little bonus — though it may be why the price went up ¥300 compared to the normal version..
The Super Saiyan's signature wild, spiky hair — like he just rolled out of bed after a week-long nap — is captured with quite a lot of volume. This means more hair parts compared to the normal version, which is probably another factor in the price increase. The yellowish color might be a bit hit-or-miss for some people.. but I think it's the best color you can realistically achieve with standard plastic molding.
Just like the previous normal version Son Gokou, the wrists still pop off too easily, and for a proper figure kit, the articulation isn't exactly impressive — that's still a bit of a letdown.. But even so, it's still a kit with a unique building experience and a lot of fun to it. The Dragon Ball series has long since had its heyday, but if this had come out when it was at peak popularity, I think it would have been a massive hit.
I'm not sure if they'll keep pushing Dragon Ball going forward, but personally, I'd love to see Virtua Fighter and other 3D fighting game characters get the Figure-rise treatment. :-)
