Kamen Rider Double : Cyclone Joker

Kit Review

Straight build
+ seals (partial panel lining)

The 3rd entry in the MG Figure-rise line is not a Dragon Ball kit, but a Kamen Rider series release.
Specifically, it's a character from the recently aired Kamen Rider Double (W) series, and true to its modern origins,
the armor overall has a sleek, refined look.

First off, this is probably a design choice, but the kit is much bigger than you'd expect. It's noticeably larger than a 1/100 Gunpla, bigger than the previous Son Gokou, and it just feels big in your hands. On the flip side, the body is much slimmer, which gives it a structural advantage in terms of articulation compared to the bulky Son Gokou.

The articulation structure and gimmicks are very similar to Son Gokou — things like the bicep pop-up gimmick and the joint construction are pretty much identical. But thanks to the slimmer build, it moves a whole lot better, and the polycap quality is excellent, so the joint strength is very solid.

Also, like Count Asuhra, each half of the body is a different color — and just like Son Gokou, the color separation is nearly perfect. The seals help fill in the finer details, so even a straight build results in a pretty sharp-looking figure. For the purple sections, both seal types are included — one that covers just the black border strip, and one that covers the entire area including the inner purple pattern — so you can decide whether to handle the inner black areas with panel lining or just slap a seal over everything.

Given the nature of the character, there aren't really any special accessories or weapons included, but you do get a choice between 2 scarf options. The two Memories that plug into the belt are nicely reproduced as well. These Gaia Memories, as they're called, store various types of combat data and are inserted into the belt during battle. As the show progresses, Memories from A to Z appear in all sorts of forms — and honestly, a Kamen Rider who carries around USB drives feels like quite the sign of the times ^^;

As a proper buildable action figure, this kit is very satisfying in terms of overall joint strength and articulation, but with character kits like this, how much you're into the character really seems to be the deciding factor. Dragon Ball's Son Gokou is such a universally known character that it's not really an issue, but with Kamen Rider, the gap between fans and non-fans is pretty wide, so opinions are likely to be split accordingly.

Looking at the overall concept, the MG Figure-rise series feels like it's an even better fit for full-on action figure characters like Kamen Rider. And given the nature of the characters, it's also easy to roll out variations one after another.. The kit quality is arguably a step above Son Gokou, so if you're a fan of the character, this is a great kit that's a lot of fun to build. :-)
