Kit Review
Straight build
Straight build
Following the Dragon Ball and Kamen Rider series, Monkey D Luffy from One Piece has been released as the 3rd entry in the MG Figure-rise lineup. As a Gum-Gum action character known for those stretchy, extending limbs, the dynamic nature of the character seems like a great fit for the MG Figure-rise concept.
First off, the overall proportions, sculpt, face, head, and straw hat are all really well done. It's clearly a different product from Son Gokou and Kamen Rider — and maybe because of that thin, elongated build, the basic articulation feels a step above the previous releases too.^^
Luffy's signature limb-extension gimmick is built in, so you can pull off Gum-Gum action to a certain degree, and on top of that, replacement parts with even longer limbs are also included. Since the replacement parts look cleaner overall, I find myself reaching for those rather than using the extension gimmick when posing. The manual's action poses are the same way. Thanks to both the extension gimmick and the swap parts, you can pull off a pretty wide variety of fun poses. That said, since the replacement parts are quite long and have some weight to them, when you fully extend the legs, the hip joints sometimes can't hold up and sag downward.
Another standout feature of the Luffy kit is the color separation on the face. The pupils, whites of the eyes, teeth, and even the tongue are all carefully color separated, so the face looks great even in a straight build — it almost feels like they were inspired by Kotobukiya's Hoihoi-san series. "This is how you do color separation! Who needs paint~"
As the most dynamic kit in the MG Figure-rise lineup, it seems like a fun build worth trying at least once if you're a One Piece fan. And while we're at it, I'd love to see a female character like Nami even if her limbs don't stretch...^^;
