Masked Rider Old 1

Kit Review

Straight build

Following the previously released Masked Rider Original Shin No. 1, Masked Rider Old 1 has now been released as well. The differences from the Shin version include a slightly different head design, the removal of the stripes on the sides of the arms and legs, and some changes to the molded colors. Everything else — the articulation and structural features — is completely identical to Shin No. 1.

Sure, this kit exists largely because it's an easy variation to pull off... but compared to the Original Shin No. 1, it has a more old-school, rugged feel that's very true to the original Masked Rider, and that actually becomes one of its charms. ^^ Like the newly designed Shin No. 1, it features improved joints and more natural posing. It is a bit light on optional parts — just the scarf and a set of pointed hands — but the base figure itself is so well done that it's satisfying enough on its own.

The kit's overall quality and finish are easily A-grade, though how much you enjoy it will really come down to how big a Masked Rider fan you are. In a way, Masked Rider Old 1 taps into nostalgia even more than the Shin version, so for longtime fans it might actually be a more compelling buy than the newer entries in the series like Double or OOO. Either way, while it's yet another entry in a lineup of similar kits, the consistently solid quality and satisfying build experience make it a great kit — one that might even help cure your Gunpla burnout. :-)
