Transformation
The Bawoo has been released as the 6th kit in the RE/100 line. It's a unit I've personally always had a soft spot for — I've always had a thing for transforming robots — and while I was secretly hoping for an MG, I'm still genuinely moved that it got a release at all, even as a RE/100. T_T
The overall build is very RE/100 in style — no inner frame or fiddly gimmicks, just a clean exterior. That makes it easy to build, and the joint strength and overall stability are excellent for its size. As a bonus feature, you can remove the head cover and rotate the mono-eye, but since so little of the eye is actually exposed, you can barely tell the difference even after rotating it... ^^;
The articulation feels oddly restrictive, probably due to the transformation gimmick. The ankle transformation mechanism in particular makes the ankles extremely stiff in MS mode, which makes it hard to pose standing on the ground. Even on a stand, the stiff ankles keep it from looking its best — so while the joint strength is solid, this doesn't feel like a kit you can expect much from in terms of posing.
The Bawoo's signature transformation gimmick is set up similarly to the HGUC Bawoo. That said, the larger 1/100 scale does allow for some extras — like the two-stage deployment of the cockpit section and the wrist gimmick that rotates 180 degrees to expose the ducts. The Bawoo Nutter also has a peg on the inside of the skirt that locks into the thigh, making it easier to hold a solid shape. By comparison, the Bawoo Attacker's shoulder joints are relatively less secure, so the lower section doesn't feel like it locks in as snugly. It would've been nice if the arms had some kind of locking point to hold a fixed angle too — that's a bit of a missed opportunity.
Since this is a unit I've always personally liked, I think the real value here is just getting it in a big, solid 1/100 with clean color separation and modern proportions. That said, the proportions do differ somewhat from the original design, and the heavy panel lines typical of RE/100 kits may be a love-it-or-hate-it thing for longtime fans. The proportion changes might also partly be due to planning for a Rebawoo variation down the line. Either way, it's a big, sturdy, well-built kit — and if the proportions work for you, it's definitely worth putting together as a 1/100. :-)
