The Y-Wing Starfighter, known for its large and finely sculpted form, has now been released in 1/72 scale. And just as expected, it's come out in spectacular fashion with some of the most complex molding and detail in Bandai's history.
Due to the Y-Wing Starfighter's design, it's no exaggeration to say that about 80% of the detail is concentrated in the center section of the fuselage. You assemble complex parts together like LEGO bricks, then layer dozens of pipes on top — it's an incredibly satisfying visual experience. Of course, to really bring out the sculpt of such refined molding, painting or panel lining is a must, and the amount of panel lining work and difficulty is top-tier as well. In my case, just carefully panel lining and assembling the fuselage alone took up an entire day off.. (don't underestimate it just because it's small)
In particular, the process of fitting dozens of pipes into the fuselage is a bit tricky — if you don't follow the manual carefully and take your time, parts can break easily. There are also some parts that need to be glued because they don't hold securely, making this overall the most challenging kit to assemble in the Bandai Star Wars lineup so far.
But once you get through all that tough panel lining and assembly work, the sense of accomplishment is just incredible...!!!!
Just like the previous kits, both an open-frame canopy and a clear + seal combination canopy are included, and the clear canopy lets you recreate the open cockpit look. On top of that, beam effect parts, a standing pilot figure, R2-D2, and other accessories are also included. Maybe because the fuselage detail is so impressive, but the stand also has more refined molding than other kits.
Either way, this is a kit that wins on visuals, and it pulls off the Y-Wing Starfighter's complex fuselage better than expected — personally, I was very satisfied with it. Sure, it takes a fair amount of panel lining work and assembly effort, but it's a high-quality kit that more than makes up for that labor, so if you're a Star Wars fan, this is one I'd highly recommend alongside the X-Wing. :-)
