AT-AT

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining

The AT-AT, which first appeared in Star Wars Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back, has been released as a Bandai Star Wars plastic model. It's a pretty well-known mech, so a lot of people had been waiting for Bandai to kit it up. Since it came out in 1/144 scale, when you actually build it, it feels more cute than the imposing bulk you felt watching it on screen. Size-wise, it's about the same volume as the 1/48 AT-ST, and like that kit, the difference before and after panel lining is pretty significant.

The head and body details are molded quite nicely, and the proportions have a real three-dimensional quality that looks like it jumped straight out of the movie. The neck joint articulation is better than expected, and the legs can take a decent variety of poses, so there's plenty of posing options. There are also some nice bonuses like the laser effect parts and the side cover open gimmick.

The cylinders on the legs aren't articulated — instead you swap parts to change their form, which is a bit of an annoying design choice. The cockpit interior detail is also a bit bare for what you'd hope for, and the legs tend to come apart easily during posing (especially the linked gimmick parts pop out a lot), so you need to be careful when setting poses. That said, the joint strength is decent enough that nothing feels loose, which is a relief.

Personally, this kit left me a little more disappointed than I expected. Mainly because the kit turned out smaller than I imagined, and there's just something a bit underwhelming about the leg gimmick and the cockpit. The detail is also a touch plain overall, aside from the underside and rear. It doesn't feel like a kit that was developed with the same burning passion as the Millennium Falcon, the crown jewel of the series.

At the end of the day, this kit's significance lies in the fact that the AT-AT has been given a solid, if unremarkable, plastic model release from Bandai. The scale is small so there aren't many other kits that pair well with it, but for Star Wars fans it should still be a meaningful addition to the collection.
