This is the 1/72 Resistance X-Wing Fighter kit from Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens. It may look similar to the original X-Wing from Episodes 4–6, but it's actually a completely different design. One of its most distinctive features is that instead of four individual engines like the original, it has two large engines each split in half and mounted across the four wings.
The basic kit composition is similar to the original X-Wing, but the wing structure is a bit simpler and the overall parts count feels slightly reduced. That said, it still requires a good amount of panel lining and seal work, and it similarly includes both plastic and clear canopy options, swappable landing gear, and laser effect parts. Same-scale Resistance pilot and BB-8 figures are also included, though BB-8 is so tiny that the detail feels a bit mushed together.
One area that's a bit disappointing is the wing articulation. Unlike the original X-Wing, when you fold the wings closed, the front and rear wings cross over each other and they frequently end up misaligned. On top of that, when the wings are spread open, the joint strength at the pivot point is weak and they tend to droop. There's just no shaking the feeling that the precision of the wing mechanism's design is a step below what you'd expect.
Everything else is solid enough, so if you've been interested in the new X-Wing, this is a fun kit to build. There are quite a few subtle differences from the original X-Wing, and either way, for any Star Wars fan this is too much of a main-character ship to pass up. :-)
