Star Wars 1/12

C-3PO & R2-D2

Kit Review

Straight build + Seals

This is the 1/12 C-3PO & R2-D2 kit released as the Star Wars Episode 8 version, combining slightly updated versions of the kits that previously came out for other episodes.

Starting with C-3PO — there was already an Episode 4–6 version released, and moving to Episode 8, the two pipe parts that went around the waist have been removed, and the wiring sticker design on the waist has been slightly changed. The right leg, which was silver, is now gold — other than that, about 95% is the same as before.

For a more detailed look at the C-3PO kit's features, check out the separate C-3PO review— this review just covers what's changed. The coating quality and sculpt are still great, but the articulation is really frustrating, so the range of poses you can pull off is quite limited. You still get both articulated and fixed arm options as well.

As for R2-D2, the structure is 100% identical to the previously released kit — the only differences are that the body uses gloss injection, and the silver areas have a semi-gloss silver coating applied in the style of an Extra Finish. Compared to the Episode 4–6 version of R2-D2, the molded colors are completely different, while compared to the Episode 7 version, only the silver coated areas differ. The various accessories for R2-D2 are included just the same as before.

The appeal of this kit lies in the fact that it reflects the subtle Episode 8 changes and bundles both figures together. For anyone who hasn't built these two yet, it's quite an attractive package. The overall quality is solid, so if you've always been a fan of this duo, it's a clean, well-made kit worth recommending. :-)
