Kit Review
Straight build + Panel lining + Seals
Straight build + Panel lining + Seals
The U-Wing and TIE Striker from Star Wars Rogue One have been released as a bundled 1/144 scale kit. As a bonus, 2 Combat Assault Tanks are also included, making for quite a packed set.
The 1/144 U-Wing is a large ship by lore standards, so even at 1/144 scale it has the presence of something closer to 1/72. That said, the design itself isn't particularly intricate, so the kit can feel a bit plain in comparison. Options include laser effect parts and 4 swappable landing gear pieces, and the movable wings can be deployed in a V-shape just like in the film.
The 1/144 TIE Striker has a similar feel to the TIE Fighter types released as Vehicle Models, and thanks to its relatively large solar panels it feels quite sizable for the scale. Feature-wise there's not much beyond the moving solar panels, and like the Vehicle Models it looks a bit bare as a straight build. That said, even a quick partial paint job with a black Gundam Marker really brings it to life.
The bonus 1/144 Combat Assault Tanks are surprisingly well-detailed for their size — and ironically, they look more polished than the main U-Wing and TIE Striker. The top hatch can be displayed either closed or open with a driver figure, so you get to choose.
Most 1/144 scale aircraft have been coming out as Vehicle Models, but since the U-Wing and TIE Striker are on the larger side, it makes sense that they got their own separate bundle kit. Overall it's a solid, no-frills kit, and if you enjoyed Star Wars Rogue One it's an easy recommendation. Just one strong word of advice — at the very least, do a partial paint job on the TIE Striker's solar panels. :-)
