The VF-22S Sturmvogel II [Gamlin Kizaki Use] from "Macross Dynamite 7" has been released as an HG kit. It's a Premium Bandai online exclusive rather than a standard release, and is essentially a color variant of the previously released standard HG YF-21 , though some new sculpts and accessories have been added.
First off, the body's molded color has been changed to a darker blue compared to the HG YF-21. New sculpts have been applied to the face, canopy hatch and cover, side skirts, and pilot figure. Everything else aside from these new design elements is completely identical to the YF-21, so all the structural characteristics carry over as well — you get solid articulation, good joint strength, and a clean swap-out transformation system. That said, one of the gun pods and the punch effect parts that were included with the HG YF-21 have been dropped as leftover parts. In their place, Figure-rise Standard jet effect parts and a clear Action Base 7 have been added.
So for this review, it should be enough to just take a close look at the changed molded colors, the new sculpt parts, and the added accessories. True to its bold transformation style — where the entire lower half swaps out wholesale — the proportions and stability after transformation are still excellent.
All in all, this is an exemplary HG Macross kit that delivers outstanding quality. There may not be many new points to speak of, but the fact that so many variations like this are getting released is meaningful in its own right. Either way, if you're a Macross 7 fan, this seems like a great item that'll take you on a solid trip down memory lane. :-)
