Round Vernian Vifam Set 1

Kit Review

Straight build + Waterslide decals

This kit is the Round Vernian Vifam Set 1, a repackage of the old-release Vifam kits. Like the L-Gaim and Dragonar before it, it's a re-release commemorating the launch of the HG Vifam, and it bundles four old-release Vifam kits together.

Set 1 includes four kits bundled together: the 1/144 Vifam with Sling Pannier, Dilfam, Ugh, and the 1/24 Aulover. True to their old-kit nature, assembly is 100% glue-based, and the molded colors are pretty basic — just a single color or two at most. Being such old kits, the runners aren't in great shape either, with quite a few flashes and mushed-out areas, so they definitely need a lot of work. On top of that, the overall articulation and joint strength aren't great, with several loose joints at the shoulders, forearms, and elsewhere.

Even though these are old-release kits, there are some special points worth noting: the Vifam's Sling Pannier can be deployed with moving parts, and the Dilfam has a detachable escape pod on the back of the body. The Aulover features an opening canopy, and as a bonus, a wonderfully old-school Claire Barbland figure is included. Overall though, the articulation isn't really up to pulling off dynamic poses, which is why so many modelers back in the day used to do joint modifications on these kits.

As is the case with re-releases like this, it's really a kit aimed at old-school fans who have fond memories of Vifam. I'm part of the generation that used to build Vifam, Neofam, and the like as a kid, so getting to build these again was genuinely moving in its own way. By today's standards, though, they're so incredibly dated that it's hard to even talk about quality as such. That said, if you've got any nostalgia for classic real-robot plastic models, this should make for a nice little trip down memory lane. :-)
