Yamato 2199 Garmillas Warship Set 1

Kit Review

Straight build

Following the 1/1000 United Space Fleet Set, the Garmillas Imperial Fleet Warship Set 1 has now been released as well. The set includes two main warships — the Destria-class heavy cruiser and the slightly smaller Kelcapia-class fast cruiser — with a reflection satellite thrown in as a bonus.

The two warships are slightly different in size, but they look so similar that it's easy to mix them up. On top of that, since everything is molded in a single color, a lot of the finer details tend to get lost. At a glance, it's hard to tell whether this is a new release or an old one (-_-), but given that the ships don't really call for any color separation by design, I guess that's just how it is.

The overall build goes pretty smoothly, though you do have to pick up dozens of tiny parts with tweezers and glue them in place, which can get a bit eye-straining. There aren't really any moving parts aside from the rotating gun barrels, so there's not a whole lot to show off beyond detail shots... On the plus side, the bonus reflection satellite does let you fold the reflector panels open or closed — though in practice you just pick one of the two positions and glue it in place.

All in all, it's not a bad-looking kit, but the flat color scheme and plain styling make it hard to recommend for anyone who just wants to do a straight build. Sure, it's worth picking up if you're a Yamato fan, but these aren't exactly the most iconic ships out there, so the appeal of the subjects themselves is a bit limited — and at ¥3,800 it's on the pricey side too. Either way, it feels a bit awkward to leave as just a straight build, so this one's really best suited for Yamato fans who are planning to paint it. :-)
