Yamato 2199 Cosmo Falcon [Kato]

Kit Review

Straight build

Following the Cosmo Zero, the Cosmo Falcon [Kato] has now joined the 1/72 Yamato 2199 lineup. The basic kit concept is the same as its predecessor, but unlike the Cosmo Zero which came with a variety of weapon variations, the Cosmo Falcon's armament has been significantly trimmed down. You get a triple missile launcher that needs to be glued onto the wing, and a weapon bay on the underside that can be swapped between open and closed states — and that's about it.

Much like the Cosmo Zero, the color separation is pretty well done aside from the red wing markings, which are done with waterslide decals. The nose section in particular is a highlight — the parts layout and assembly feel are excellent. Fitting all those small interlocking pieces together like building blocks, snapping together like LEGO, is genuinely satisfying~

The swappable landing gear looks great and holds firmly, which is satisfying. However, the closed-state block for the swappable weapon bay on the underside is quite poorly secured. Even a small bump is enough to make it slide right out. The open-state block holds firmly, which is a relief. My guess is they intentionally left more clearance on the closed block so it wouldn't be too hard to remove, but they went a bit too far and the fit ended up being really poor..

The only moving part is the rear nozzle, which is assembled to look like 4 movable covers on the top and bottom — but in practice, only the large cover at the very back actually moves. That said, assembling the nozzle section requires pushing in several tight pins all at once, which makes the process pretty frustrating.. In my case, I ended up having to widen the holes a bit with a knife before I could finally get it together.

Overall, this kit is a bit easier to build than the Cosmo Zero and comes with fewer accessories, making it a pretty straightforward build. Since it looks quite good even as a straight build, it seems like a fun little item for any Yamato fan to enjoy. :-)
