Yamato 1/1000

Yamato 2199 Battleship Carrier Darold

Kit Review

Straight build

The Yamato 2199 lineup now gets the space battle carrier Darold — one of the larger warships — released in 1/1000 scale. Just like the previous releases, there are some bonus ships included, and this kit comes with a pure white disc-shaped Independent Battle Command Ship and the bomber Garunt thrown in as extras.

The basic kit construction and features are the same as previous releases — straightforward assembly with some larger parts, along with a few smaller pieces that need to be glued. The overall detail, surface molding, and sense of depth are all solid, but.. the ships included in this kit happen to be made up entirely of single-color moldings, so the straight build ends up feeling noticeably plain.

As for the various gimmicks, the Darold features rotating gun barrels and the ability to swap the gun deck out for a flat flight deck. The Independent Battle Command Ship can be displayed with its top arms deployed, and the Garunt comes with cute little removable landing gear.

There's not a whole lot of standout features to talk about with this kit, so just flipping through the photos to get a feel for the ships should be enough.. That said, as you can see, the styling and quality both look great, but it's a shame that all that nice detail gets lost in a straight build. T_T This is really a special kit for die-hard Yamato fans — one that's best recommended for those who are planning to paint it. :-)
