Yamato 1/500

Yamato 2199 Yamato 2199 Expansion Set

Kit Review

Straight build

The big and imposing 1/500 Yamato 2199 always had something a bit off about it — there were slots for wings but no wings included, and just like the 1/1000, it looked like it was going to feature the No. 2 Hangar with a space left open and a removable cover, but the hangar itself wasn't included. It was pretty much expected to come out as a separate release, and sure enough, here it is — bundled together as an expansion set.

So as explained above, this kit is an expansion set consisting of the No. 2 Hangar and the wings. First off, the price of ¥3,000 feels a bit steep for what you get.. The runner count is low for the price, and the finished result doesn't quite feel like it's worth that much either. Maybe they figured people who want it will buy it regardless. -_-;

That said, it's incomparably more detailed and substantial than the No. 2 Hangar in the 1/1000, and it does look great. The central column, frame, Cosmo Falcons and more all have color separation, so it's visually quite colorful. The detail is much more refined too, and it's a uniquely fun build. There's also a dedicated stand included so you can display it separately outside the ship.

The No. 2 Hangar holds a total of 32 Cosmo Falcons, each glued in place individually. Four of them are fully detailed down to the bottom and can be displayed separately, and 2 folded-wing Cosmo Zeros are included as a bonus. On top of that, both a lift-style launch platform and a deployed launch platform are included, along with one left-side gray armor piece to recreate the launch scene — so you can recreate the Cosmo Zero storage and launch sequence just like in the review photos above.

The included wings are solid in terms of basic construction, with the upper and lower color separation nicely done using two parts, so they do their job well. That said, compared to the hangar they feel a little underwhelming — it's more of a "oh neat, you can put wings on it" kind of reaction. ^^;

I'm not entirely sure why these weren't included in the original kit and were sold separately instead — maybe the development timeline was too tight to get the hangar done in time, or perhaps they split it off to keep the main kit from getting unreasonably expensive. Either way, the value proposition is a bit questionable, but if you own the 1/500 Yamato 2199, this is definitely an accessory worth picking up. :-)
