Kit Review

Bandai had been putting out a surprising number of oversized kits in 2014, and following the HGUC Neo Zeong, they've released another unexpected large-scale kit — the Yamato 2199 Domelaze The 3rd. With an in-universe length of 730 meters, this super-massive warship comes out to a whopping 73cm even at 1/1000 scale, making it an absolutely enormous kit.
First off, the box is a large carry-handle box the same size as a mid-to-large PG box. And much like the HGUC Neo Zeong, the parts are big but the actual part count isn't all that high — so the contents feel similar in that regard. Maybe that's why, despite the PG-level price tag of ¥12,000, you can breeze through the build in about 2 hours tops.
Since the parts are so large, the overall detail depth is a step up from previous kits — though it's more of a bold, sweeping kind of detail rather than anything particularly intricate. That said, the smaller red and white sections are neatly broken up with good color separation, so even a straight build looks pretty clean. ^^
On the functional side, the bridge section's independent battle command ship can be detached and reattached. This command ship can be built in one of two configurations: with or without the dimensional matter transporter. Worth noting that this independent battle command ship was also included in the old 1/1000 Darold warship kit. The front and rear sections can also be fully separated — presumably for storage purposes — so the length shouldn't be an issue when it comes to storing or putting it away.
All in all, it's a tough kit to justify on a value-for-money basis at ¥12,000 — but for Yamato fans, just having it exist at all is something to be grateful for. The detail, proportions, and color separation are all clean, but unless you're a true fan, it's not exactly a "let me give this a try" kind of price. Either way, I'd like to give Bandai a thumbs up for putting out such a fantastic item for the die-hard fans. :-)
