Yamato 1/1000

Ginga

Kit Review

Straight build

The wave motion experimental ship "Ginga" from Yamato 2202 has been released in 1/1000 scale. At first glance it might look like just a bridge variant of the existing Yamato, but there are actually quite a few differences scattered throughout the kit.

The basic internal frame is the same as the existing Yamato 2202, and the lighting system — using two small LED units and one large LED unit — is identical as well. However, Ginga only includes one small LED unit, and the remaining two need to be purchased separately. The lighting method itself is the same as the Yamato, but with the bridge design being significantly larger, the LED effect on the bridge actually looks much better than on the Yamato. On the flip side, a round cover has been added to the front wave motion gun section, so the LED light source is only visible as a narrow strip.

If you look closely, the hull section excluding the bridge has also been redesigned compared to the existing Yamato 2202 — as you can see in the comparison shots above, there are noticeably more small molded details. On top of that, a vertical structure has been added to the lower section, and the design of all three main gun turrets has been changed as well.

On top of all that, the research facility dome in the center can be swapped between a clear part and a semi-transparent light blue part, and the Cosmo Zero and Blackbird have been added to the fighter lineup. So while it may look like just a bridge variant at first, quite a bit of the exterior has actually been changed — and for Yamato fans, this seems like a high-quality space battleship kit that's well worth picking up. :-)
