Yamato 1/1000

Yamato 2202 [Final Battle Ver.]

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the 1/1000 Yamato 2202 [Final Battle Ver.], a variation kit of the previously released 1/1000 Yamato 2202. True to its name, this is the Yamato 2202 version that was upgraded with increased firepower for the final battle, and the additions and changes are as follows.

   - Molded colors are darker overall
   - A total of 24 turrets added to the fore, aft, and side decks
   - Main gun design changed, with 2 additional turrets added on top of each main gun
   - Bridge antenna extended further out to the sides
   - New-style action base added

The price went up ¥300 due to the changes above, but given everything that's been added, it's not really that big of a jump. There are quite a few additions that might seem minor at first glance, but with a total of 30 extra small turrets added, the overall look is noticeably more complex and detailed. Plus, the included action base means you can now display it from a variety of angles.

Parts for the normal version are included alongside the Final Battle Ver. parts, but swapping between them isn't really a simple parts swap — it's basically a full disassembly and reassembly. There's not much reason to buy this kit just to build it as the normal version, and the process is a real pain, so those parts are pretty much leftover parts as far as I'm concerned.

All that said, this feels like the ultimate 1/1000 Yamato kit, and even if you've already built the previous 1/1000 Yamato 2202, this variation kit still has enough going for it to make a second run worthwhile. :-)

1/1000 Yamato 2202 [Final Battle Ver.] | 2019. 3 | ¥5,800
