Yamato 1/1000

Yamato 2202 [Final Battle Ver.] [High Dimension Clear]

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the 1/1000 Yamato 2202 [Final Battle Ver.] [High Dimension Clear], a simple color variant of the previously released 1/1000 Yamato 2202 [Final Battle Ver.] with the molded color changed to clear yellow.

With all the parts switched to clear, the build difficulty has gone up quite a bit — the clear material makes it so much harder to clean up the stiff gate marks on all those tiny little parts. On top of that, the small parts are even harder to see because of the transparent material, making the assembly itself a real pain. And to make matters worse, even after you struggle through the build, the transparent material means all that precise detail and tight sculpting just doesn't come through. You can probably tell from the photos, but in person it's the same story — all you really see is the overall silhouette, and the presence of Yamato's many distinctive gun barrels is almost completely lost. T_T

Given that it's a clear kit, there's a chance it could look really stunning when lit up with LEDs. But even after installing the separately sold LED units, the light scatters in a kind of awkward way and it's not as beautiful as you'd hope. The propulsion section's LEDs are noticeably brighter than the front and bridge sections, so it ends up glowing in this weird way where the front is dark and the back is bright.

All in all, this kit leaves a lot to be desired — the build is harder than the original, the finished look is a pale, washed-out silhouette, and the LED lighting effect is underwhelming. Since it's a limited release aimed at die-hard Yamato fans anyway, it feels like the significance lies in the fact that it exists at all, rather than in the quality. :-)
