RX-78F00 Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

This kit is the 1/48 RX-78F00 Gundam released as a Gundam Factory Yokohama exclusive. Back in December 2020, the 1/48 Burst Modelwas released, and now we have the full-body 1/48 version. The head, upper body, and shoulder parts from the Burst Model are reused as-is, while the rest of the body is all-new sculpting.

With the arms, lower body, and legs newly added, the total part count has grown enormously. It's the same 1/48 scale as the Mega Size, but the part count and level of detail are incomparably richer and more refined. The complex color scheme unique to the Yokohama Gundam is perfectly realized through color separation rather than stickers, which is why such a massive number of parts are involved. There's a real joy to building it — like assembling LEGO, you're stacking together parts in all sorts of different colors.

Perhaps because the parts layout is so focused on sculpting and color separation, the articulation leaves a bit to be desired. Then again, this is more of a statue-type kit that suits standing display over dynamic posing anyway. The Mega Size-specific polycaps give each joint solid hold, but with so many more parts than the Mega Size the body is heavier, which makes things feel a little precarious at times. Standing upright is no problem at all, but the hip joints aren't strong enough to lift those heavy legs very high. (As a prime example, I had a hard time getting shots with the limbs folded in as far as they'd go.) On top of that, the feet are quite narrow by design, so ground contact isn't great either — but for just standing it up with a bit of a pose for display purposes, the joints are more than up to the task.

One highlight: the fully articulated fingers turned out better than expected — honestly, the build quality is higher than the system-insert articulated fingers you get on PG kits. Every knuckle on every finger is both flexible and holds firmly in place, so you can shape natural-looking hand poses without any frustration. This kit drops the weapons that came with the 1/100 and 1/144 versions and includes only the main body, which makes posing feel a little bare, but the expressive hands at least help liven things up.

On top of that, like the 1/48 Burst Model, an LED unit is included so you can light up the eyes, and the same stand from the Burst Model is in the box too. That said, the stand is really too small to support the full 1/48 body — you end up having to stand it with the legs close together, which doesn't do the proportions any favors.

To sum it up: this is an oversized Gunpla you can build like LEGO, snapping together a rainbow of parts thanks to incredible color separation, and the three-dimensional impact and visual flair of the straight build is nothing short of overwhelming. It comes in at PG-level pricing without any kind of precision inner frame, but it still feels absolutely worth the money. Personally, if I could only display 10 kits out of the thousands I've built, this one would definitely make the cut. :-)
