The second kit from Gundam Reconguista in G is the uniquely designed Grimoire. With its low parts count but ¥1,400 price tag, it's a bit of a head-scratcher — volume-wise it honestly looks like a ¥1,000 kit..
The secret behind that somewhat puzzling price seems to lie in the molding quality. The deep reddish-brown armor molded color has this incredibly premium matte-like finish that looks just like it's been painted. It's nothing like gloss injection, and it's on a completely different level from any molded color I've seen before — it's got this painted-look surface texture that feels almost brand new for Bandai. How do they even achieve this kind of surface quality straight from the mold...????
The parts layout is also clean and satisfying to build, and once it's done, the color scheme along with the unique design and proportions are really appealing. The articulation is pretty average though, which is a bit of a letdown. On the flip side, the joint strength is quite solid, so it's a kit that's fun to handle.
Either way, this kit has a unique and fresh feel to it in a lot of ways, so if you've been getting a bit tired of the usual Bandai Gunpla, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. That premium matte-like molded color in particular feels like a masterstroke — even an old fan like me is now looking forward to the other kits in the Gundam Reconguista in G lineup. :-)
