Reconguista in G HG

Gundam G-Self Assault Pack

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers

When it comes to massive weapon systems for MS, SEED had the Meteor Unit and 00 had the GN Arms. Now in Gundam Reconguista in G, a large weapon system called the Assault Pack has made its way into the HG lineup. It's basically a weapon system for the G-Self, but instead of the normal blue G-Self, the included unit has had its color changed to red. Everything from the knees up is completely identical in structure to the existing G-Self, but the leg armor and feet have been newly redesigned for the Assault Pack.

The G-Self's Assault Pack is a classic armament-enhancement weapon system, packing a huge beam saber at the back, a beam rifle in the middle, hefty missile pod packs on both sides, and a large beam cannon up top. While the concept is similar to previous large weapon systems, the design is completely new — the color separation is pretty well done, and the connection between parts is excellent, making it a surprisingly easy kit to handle for its size. ^^ Compared to the GN Arms from 00, it boasts nearly perfect rigidity, and it connects solidly to the G-Self as well, so there's really nothing to complain about in terms of stability.

As for special gimmicks, a total of six hatches open up across the missile pod packs on both sides, giving it a really cool look. Beyond that, though, everything else just moves a tiny bit and there aren't really any standout gimmicks, which does leave things feeling a little bare. The large beam cannon mounted on top in particular is fixed and doesn't move at all, and while the beam rifle, beam saber, and missile pods do have some articulation, it doesn't really change the silhouette much.

As for the G-Self inside, there's not much it can do pose-wise other than grabbing the handle of the large beam cannon up top or the beam rifle handles on either side. With limited functionality like this, it's a bit of a dull kit for recreating a variety of poses — but on the flip side, it's the kind of kit that just looks absolutely stunning displayed as-is.

All in all, this is a kit that delivers solid quality across the board. Kits this big usually give you headaches with stability, but the fact that it holds together so well for its size is once again a big plus. Even if you're not a Gundam Reconguista in G fan, the satisfying build experience and the sheer presence of the straight build make this one I'd happily recommend to Gunpla builders everywhere. :-)
