After Gundam X came out under the HGAW title, this time G Gundam has been released under the HGFC title. The basic concept and structural characteristics are similar to Gundam X — it's an HGUC-class lineup armed with clean color separation and excellent articulation.
First off, similar to Gundam X, the overall impression is "clean." Perfect color separation on par with MG, proportions that are surprisingly slim for a 1/144, excellent articulation, solid joint strength — this is a kit that's hard to fault on any front. Minus the inner frame, there's really nothing that falls short compared to MG. If anything, the compact size gives it a reassuring feel in hand, and with joints that are snug all over without any looseness, it actually feels sharper to handle than MG.
It's also packed with features — the hand configuration matches MG with transparent hands for the Sekiha Tenkyoken and bent hands included, and the chest energy multiplier opening gimmick, forearm armor slide function, and Core Lander attachment/detachment are all reproduced.
In terms of articulation, it handles the wide variety of poses unique to G Gundam without any real issues, though it does feel a slight step behind the previous Gundam X. Comparing joint by joint they're at a similar level, but when you actually strike a pose, the naturalness and range of motion is clearly a notch above on the Gundam X side. Of course, that's comparing it to Gundam X, which is a top-tier A+ action figure kit — by any absolute standard, G Gundam is still a solid A-class action figure kit in its own right.
Although this series got its start due to a shortage of new items, with quality this clean and polished, I'd love to see them just pump out everything they can. Something called "HGUC-class" should feel a step above the existing SEED/00 HGs, and both HGAW and HGFC are definitely a grade above the regular HG line.
The fan base for Mobile Fighter G Gundam itself isn't all that large, which is a bit of a concern, but since this is a compact, clean, A-grade quality kit, I think it's something I can recommend broadly regardless of whether you're a G Gundam fan or not. Once you build it, it's genuinely a looker. :-)
