Jegan [Ecoas Type]

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + seals

As you'd expect from an ongoing anime series, Gundam Unicorn items keep getting the HGUC treatment. This time it's the Jegan [Ecoas Type], which — like the Lotto from the same unit — sports a combination of dark brown and light brown tones.. though for some reason the colors came out looking quite different from Lotto.

The base body is built around the standard Jegan, so the arms, legs, shield, and inner torso frame reuse existing Jegan parts, while the shoulders are carried straight over from the Stark Jegan's new parts. Everything else — the head, backpack, front body armor, and bazooka — are newly added for the Ecoas Type, making this roughly a 30% new-parts partial variation.

First off, the Ecoas color molded colors are on the darker side, but they have a reasonably solid feel to them — not flashy, but they carry a certain weight and presence. That said, depending on your taste they might come across as a bit drab. Then again, if they'd gone with a muddy brownish color similar to Lotto.. that might've looked even stranger somehow;;

Since the base is the clean, well-made HGUC Jegan, the overall build quality and joint strength are excellent, though the articulation is fairly average by comparison. That said, the shoulder joints are on the flexible side, which makes posing feel pretty easy.

The newly redesigned head features a visor that can be raised or lowered, though unfortunately it's not articulated — you swap between two separate visor parts instead. It's probably a limitation of the grade, but it's the kind of thing that could've been done as a moving part, so it's a little disappointing. Also, there's an interesting feature where you cut off part of the runner and use it to store the visor and spare hands.. It's not hugely useful, but it's a little better than nothing. ^^;

It seems like a lot of people came away with a soft spot for the Ecoas group after watching episode 3 of Unicorn, and following Lotto, this feels like a pretty well-timed release. It's based on the existing Jegan, but the head, backpack, and torso — the parts that really catch your eye — are all new, so it still has the feel of a fresh kit. If you've been craving a new small-scale HGUC with that satisfying hands-on build experience, this looks like a kit you'll have a good time putting together. :-)
