HGUC AMX-009

Dreissen [Unicorn Ver.]

Kit Review

Straight build +
panel lining

The Dreissen is finally here!!! Released in the Unicorn version.
There are still quite a few Z/ZZ-lineage suits that haven't gotten an HGUC release yet, so even if it's not part of the proper ZZ lineup, it's great to see it show up in the Unicorn version ^^
Flip side of that, though — it feels like it only got a kit release because it happened to appear in Unicorn, even if briefly.. (somehow that's a little sad..)

The first thing that hits you when you finish building it is the sheer size — but that's only natural given that ZZ-lineage suits are canonically well over 20 meters tall. The height feels closer to 1/100 than 1/144, and thanks to the Dom-lineage's thick, chunky design, it comes across as quite large for an HGUC.

The basic color separation and proportions are solid, as you'd expect from a modern kit, but the overall parts layout and breakdown feel a little less refined. It gives off more of a vibe of an HGUC from around 4–5 years ago rather than a brand-new release. That might partly be because lately we've been spoiled by small, intricate kits like RG, so coming back to a big, no-frills HGUC makes the contrast more noticeable.. On the plus side, the parts are large and the assembly feels satisfying and straightforward. Either way, this is definitely not a kit going for that tight, finely detailed look.

That said, joint strength is more than solid despite the large frame — the modern polycaps do their job well. Articulation isn't great given the design, but you can still pull off a decent variety of poses. Then again, this is a kit that's all about presence rather than poseability..

The HGUC Dreissen comes with a pretty generous set of accessories — the Giant Bazz, heat saber, beam tomahawk, beam lancer, tri-blades, and more are all included. On top of that, there are various weapon mounting gimmicks, a runner piece for storing leftover parts, and even a tri-blade launch display that borrows the clear plastic rod from the HGUC Jagd Doga.

It's a particularly exciting item for longtime fans — not the slickest or most cutting-edge kit out there, but it's a Dreissen with noticeably improved quality, and the wide variety of accessories and weapons add a fun, playful touch. :-)
