RGM-86R GM III [Unicorn Desert Clor Ver.]

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the HGUC GM III ~ Unicorn Desert Color Ver., released as a Bandai Club G exclusive. As you can see, it's a typical color variant kit, but for once Bandai actually did a few things they don't usually bother with. ^^

First, the shield's cover parts were swapped out for ones without the cross design, and the knee, inner shoulder, rear skirt, and rear leg parts were moved to new runners to accommodate the molded color changes. In short, this required quite a significant amount of mold modification — and having parts actually changed for a limited edition is pretty rare for Bandai kits. ^^; (It's pretty common for Kotobukiya though...)

Anyway, thanks to all that effort, we get an almost perfectly realized sandy desert color GM III, though the structure itself is 100% identical to the standard version. The new polycap parts give it really solid joint strength, but the shoulders and leg sections still have that same articulation-unfriendly design, so it's not exactly the best kit for action poses.

All that said, it does its job well as a color variant kit, and with mold adjustments you don't often see in other kits, it feels like a pretty meaningful limited release. If you're a fan of the GM series, this is a fun little treat. :-)
