Master Gundam & Fuunsaiki

Kit Review

Straight build
+ seals + panel lining

The Master Gundam & Fuunsaiki was released at the same time as the HGFC Shining Gundam. As the product name suggests, this kit includes not just Master Gundam but also his beloved steed Fuunsaiki.

First off, Master Gundam's quality is the highest in the HGFC God Gundam lineup. The color separation and molded colors are clean, the arms and legs fold up nicely, the polycaps hold just right — overall build quality is excellent. Just like the MG, you get the fluorescent hand as well as several different hand types for a variety of poses. Being 1/144 scale, the wing shields are fixed rather than articulated, but if anything that actually makes the proportions look better.

Both the backpack-mounted fixed form and the body-wrapping form of the wing shields are included, and they can be swapped on and off. It's not just the normal mode where the shields wrap around the whole body — you can also open one side slightly to let a hand through. And just like Shining Gundam, a large red fluorescent hand is included, giving you plenty of options. The little Master Asia figure is a particularly fun extra. ^^

The Fuunsaiki included is certainly a welcome addition in and of itself, but it comes with more limitations than you'd expect. For starters, I was a bit thrown off at first to find that it's essentially a kit designed solely for the standing pose with the front legs raised on a stand. In other words, it's not really a horse kit(?) designed to stand normally on the ground. I imagine this was done for the sake of proportions and stability, but the rear leg hip joints have completely given up on articulation and are fixed in place with square-shaped pins. The middle leg joints do move in two stages, but not nearly enough to stand the horse flat on the ground or pull off a variety of poses.

In short, the message seems to be "just display it in the rearing Napoleon pose and leave it at that" — but it's still a bit puzzling that they didn't even bother to make a proper four-legs-on-the-ground standing mode work. It really wouldn't have been that hard... That's an unexpectedly disappointing point. And while I get it to some extent, parts like the hooves and mouth area that could easily have had color separation are molded as single pieces, which creates a bit of a gap from the official color scheme. Bottom line: Fuunsaiki doesn't quite feel like it got the attention it deserved.

That said, once you put Master Gundam up on Fuunsaiki with the front legs raised, it looks pretty darn cool. The feature that lets you connect Master Gundam's action base peg hole to Fuunsaiki in place of the saddle is worth praising. Without that locking gimmick it would've been a real headache, but thanks to it, Master Gundam sits up there nice and solid.

So while Fuunsaiki can't stand on all four legs and is stuck in that fixed rearing pose, it's undeniably a great match with Master Gundam. As long as you're not expecting a wide variety of poses from Fuunsaiki, this Master Gundam & Fuunsaiki combo kit is clearly a high-quality product that's well worth a strong recommendation. :-)
