The Zogok, one of the most distinctively weird designs from First Gundam, has FINALLY!!! been released as an HGUC kit. Even the grotesque Juaggu got the HGUC treatment... so I'd been waiting for the slightly more humanoid Zogok to follow suit, and here it is at last. ^^
Of course, the Unicorn magic is behind all this, so it does come out under the Unicorn Ver. title — but it's lived up to the wait and turned out to be an incredibly high-quality kit.
First thing that jumps out at you is the modernized, refined design and proportions. It's been cleaned up so nicely that old-school fans who were expecting that creepy, bizarre feel might actually be a little disappointed. That said, the gray band sections on the legs are boldly handled through separate parts, which is a nice touch, and the interior of the body — where the mono-eye mechanism sits — has a decent amount of mechanical frame detail recreated inside.
The pipe-style joint design means articulation isn't exactly stellar, but the solid joint strength lets you pull off a natural kneeling pose without much trouble. And surprisingly, it strikes some really dynamic poses quite well, so there's a good amount of fun to be had posing it as an action figure.
The 10 boomerang cutters that plug into the head are also brilliantly executed — they're fully removable and hold on firmly. On top of that, the heat sword comes with both a standard plastic part and a clear part, so you can paint the clear one with clear paints to get a really convincing glowing effect if you're into that. You also get arm punch extension parts and two Sturm Fausts as accessories.
Overall, this is a kit with excellent build feel, great parts breakdown, and top-notch quality all around. At the HGUC level, there's really nothing to complain about — though personal taste on the proportions may vary. Either way, as an old-school fan I found this kit extremely satisfying, and if the unique style appeals to you, it's an A++ kit I'd recommend to any Gunpla fan. :-)
