Schuzrum Galluss

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + stickers

In a Unicorn lineup dominated by reused parts, we finally get an original UC design released as an HGUC. The star of the show is the Schuzrum Galluss — a brand-new unit with a head that looks like it came from a Qubeley and a body that's hard to pin down as being based on any particular design.

As you can see, this is a new release that scores pretty well on uniqueness and personality. It's got that grotesque head, a body that looks like it's made of weapon fragments, and some seriously mean-looking spike shields and chain mines. The basic color separation is decent too, so the straight build doesn't look bad at all — but it's also a kit where some oddly placed stickers end up being a bit of an eyesore.

As shown in the review photos above, the chest emblem has no raised molding — it's just a flat surface with a sticker on it. Considering that most previous kits had molded details for their emblems, this feels like a strange omission. On top of that, all the red on the front skirt, legs, and feet is handled with stickers, which feels unbalanced when you look at how well the color separation is done elsewhere. In short, something just feels off...

And despite its distinctive looks, this kit is also a bit underwhelming to actually handle. The joints don't have that satisfying tight feel (though they're not loose either), the middle section of the shield tends to pop off, and the head keeps falling out for no apparent reason. So it doesn't quite feel like a crisp, polished new release. The articulation is just a plain 90 degrees, and the mono-eye rotation gimmick feels a bit half-baked too. Sure, recent kits have set the bar so high that our expectations have gone up — but compared to other recent HGUC releases, you can't shake the feeling that something's just a little lacking. ^^;

Anyway, it doesn't feel as dated as an old kit, but it's a bit too rough around the edges to call it a clean, high-quality release. That said, it's got one of the most distinctive designs in all of Gunpla, so if you focus on the look and enjoy it for what it is, it's still a pretty decent new kit. :-)
