With the HGUC lineup struggling to find new subjects, the "Revive" series has kicked off — breathing new life into existing HGUC kits using the latest technology. And naturally, the first one out of the gate is the Guncannon, HGUC kit #001. Since the original HGUC Guncannon came out back in 1999, this is a rebirth a whopping 16 years in the making. ^^
First off, the Revive version Guncannon shows a big difference from the original right from the assembly process. The runners themselves feel softer and more flexible than before, so snipping parts off and cleaning up the gates is a really smooth experience. It gives you that satisfying, premium feel where everything just clicks together nicely.
That said, looking at the finished model on its own, it doesn't necessarily feel more detailed than the original version. Instead, the proportions have been completely updated to a modern style, giving it an overall slender look. The head in particular is much smaller than the original — the difference is so dramatic that it's going to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing. The Guncannon always had that masculine, sturdy, almost goofy charm to it, but with the head shrunk down this much, it almost starts to look a bit feminine.
Working through the joints, there's a clear sense of improvement over the original. Thanks to the arms and legs folding up so well, demanding poses like kneeling and prone firing come off very naturally. The original from 16 years ago had decent articulation in its own right, but this Revive version delivers a dynamic feel in any pose thanks to the more flexible shoulders, arms, neck, and ankle joints. Joint strength is smooth yet holds position well, as you'd expect from the newer HG polycaps that have been in use for the past few years. One thing to note is that the shoulder joints tend to pop out when you're posing it around — though that's a common issue seen across many kits using the newer polycaps.
One thing — the spray missile launcher that was included with the original version is missing from the Revive. I'm not really sure why they dropped it from the new release since it wasn't even that impressive an accessory, but given that this kit doesn't come with much to begin with, it does feel a little bare..
To wrap things up — this is a high-quality kit reborn with clean parts layout and assembly feel befitting a modern release, top-tier articulation, and refined proportions. That said, some old-school fans might take issue with the proportions being a bit too slim and the head being too small. Even so, the overall quality is hard to fault, so this is a kit I'd happily recommend to any Gunpla fan. :-)
