R-Jarja

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers + Panel lining

The R-Jarja from ZZ Gundam has finally made it to the HGUC lineup. Since the HG R-Gyagya came out first as part of the Build Fighters series back in 2014, I figured the R-Jarja would follow pretty quickly — but it ended up taking five years. As expected, about 70% of the parts are carried over directly from the HG R-Gyagya, with the original R-Jarja-specific parts added on top.

First off, the red molded color comes out really nicely, so even a straight build gives you a pretty impressive look. True to HGUC standards, the proportions and color separation are excellent, making it a complete visual overhaul compared to the old kit — no contest. Articulation is on par with the HG R-Gyagya, so it's fairly average and doesn't lend itself to super dynamic poses. Joint strength is decent, though I do wish it were a bit tighter.

The optional parts are fairly minimal — just the joint parts for mounting the beam rifle on the shoulder, an open left hand, and the beam parts. The gimmick where you rotate the shoulder armor to bring the variable shield forward to the front is reproduced here. Overall it feels clean and solid, but there's nothing particularly special about it either — it's a straightforward, no-frills upgrade.

As of February 2019 when I'm writing this review, the Zeta Gundam kits have all been renewed in HGUC, but there are still quite a few ZZ Gundam kits left to go. With the R-Jarja leading the way, I'm really hoping unique mechs like the Hamma-Hamma and Jamru Fin get the HGUC treatment too. Either way, as an old-school fan, it's hard not to be happy seeing a clean, renewed R-Jarja. :-)
