Gundam Deathscythe

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers + Panel lining

Gundam Deathscythe from Gundam W has now been released as an HGAC kit. The previously released Gundam Heavyarms and Gundam Sandrock were both decent kits in their own right, but the HGAC Deathscythe feels like it's taken things up another notch — mainly in terms of articulation and overall stability.

First off, the looks and parts breakdown are clean and tidy as you'd expect from a modern HGAC kit, with solid color separation that keeps sticker use to a minimum. Even as a straight build, the visuals and proportions are excellent. The signature beam scythe lets you choose between two beam parts, and the folded version can be stored on the rear skirt. The Buster Shield has great color separation and uses an internal gear-linked gimmick to spread the claws open, with dedicated beam parts that can be attached as well.

The hand parts included in the shared frame still show off great detail and proportions. Using the waist and hip joint slide gimmicks lets you raise the thighs to a pretty steep angle. The double waist lock pin gimmick that tilts the whole upper body forward was also present in the HGAC Sandrock/Heavyarms, but interference from the front upper body armor made it hard to use properly — bend it too far and the waist joint would pop out. On this kit, though, you can tilt the waist gimmick forward fully without any interference.

On top of that, the knee section now includes a joint extension gimmick that wasn't on the Sandrock/Heavyarms, achieving a level of articulation where the legs can fold up completely. Thanks to these improved waist and special knee gimmicks, you can pull off high-difficulty poses like kneeling or prostrating more naturally than on just about any other kit, as you can see in the review photos above. As a bonus, you can also actuate the shoulder verniers to improve the arm's lateral raise range — overall, there's clearly more thought put into the gimmick design compared to the earlier kits.

Alongside these articulation upgrades, joint strength also feels subtly better — compared to the HGAC Gundam Sandrock/Heavyarms with their similar construction, the overall joint balance and stability is just on a different level. There's none of the shoulder-popping that's a chronic issue with HG-grade polycaps, and from head to toe the joints feel smooth yet tight.

This kit delivers a level of polish that's basically the gold standard for HG-grade kits — it feels like it went through careful design work and thorough mold refinement. You'd almost suspect there's a die-hard Gundam Deathscythe fan among the Bandai developers, because this is a flawless kit I can wholeheartedly recommend without hesitation. :-)
