The Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam from the theatrical anime "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM" has been released as an HGCE kit. In terms of lore, it's a combination of the Strike Freedom Gundam Type 2 and the Proud Defender. The main body shares nearly the same design concept as the existing Strike Freedom, but the details differ here and there.
First off, the polycap-less joints stand out for their solid joint strength and excellent articulation. No matter what pose you put it in, everything holds well, making it a really fun kit to pose. The weapon loadout, beam rifle combination, and railgun deployment gimmick are all pretty much the same as the Strike Freedom. The newly added anti-ship sword is a nice addition, and the Proud Defender's wing deployment gimmick has been simplified quite a bit, making it much easier to handle.
All 8 wings of the Proud Defender have slide-type deployment gimmicks, which expose the pink stickers on the inside when deployed. These pink stickers aren't your typical seals — they have more of a thin PET sticker feel, which makes them noticeably easier to apply. Normally, long narrow stickers tend to curl up and be a pain to stick on, but because these hold their shape thanks to the stiffer material, you can get them on easily as long as you line them up right. The surface also has a shinier gloss effect, which is a nice touch all around.
One thing to note — securing the beam sabers to the side skirts tends to have poor retention on a lot of kits, and this one is no exception. When attaching them to the top of the railgun, the parts keep spreading apart and the connection weakens, causing them to fall off easily. If you glue the two center parts of the railgun together when assembling, that fixes the retention issue cleanly, so keep that in mind. Also, given the design's naturally heavy backpack, you'll need to shift the legs slightly backward when standing it on the ground to account for the center of gravity. The joint strength is good enough to hold a standing pose, but for action poses, this is definitely a kit that needs a stand to really look its best.
Overall, the design and gimmicks are so similar to the existing Strike Freedom that it can feel a little been-there-done-that — but being a 100% new mold, if you look closely it really is a new design. The wings are much easier to deploy and handle, so it does feel like a step up from the HGCE Strike Freedom. Either way, if you're a fan of SEED kits and the style appeals to you, this seems like a fantastic kit you can grab without hesitation. :-)
