HGAC XXXG-01SR2

Gundam Sandrock Custom EW

Kit Review

Straight build + Stickers + Panel lining

This kit is the Gundam Sandrock Custom EW released in the HGAC line. Compared to the standard HGAC Gundam Sandrock,it comes as a completely new sculpt. Club G also released an HGAC Gundam Sandrock Customat one point, but that one looked almost identical to the original Gundam Sandrock externally.

Being a new sculpt, quite a few things have been updated — the joint structure, articulation, and more. A gimmick has been added where the hip joints swing down to the sides, and the polycap-less joints feel solid and sturdy. This gives it excellent stability in any pose. Polycap-less joints can sometimes be overly stiff, but thankfully this kit isn't tight to the point of being annoying.

In terms of weapons, only the Heat Shotels are included, with both silver and clear red blade options. The beam machine gun and shield that came with the MG Gundam Sandrock Kai are absent here, making the weapon loadout feel a bit sparse. Also, the neck and hand parts — which should be white per the original design — are molded in a dark gray like a frame color. The W runner containing these parts is labeled "XXXG Frame EW," which suggests this was a deliberate decision to allow parts sharing with other HGAC EW kits down the line. Still, these aren't parts that would've been difficult to color separate at all, so it's a bit of a letdown.

The highlight of this kit is the cape, which is made from a new material — something close to vinyl. What's interesting is that it's molded with wrinkles already worked in to some degree. In practice though, it's stiffer than you'd expect, so getting natural-looking folds beyond the existing ones is pretty tough. It also tends to get in the way during posing, making it hard to arrange convincingly. (The natural-looking folds in the sample photos are a bit of a cheat..) Also, I was initially thrown off because the shoulder cape pieces would pop off at the slightest touch — just be aware that you need to properly understand the locking pin structure and seat them correctly for them to stay put.

So this is the first EW mobile suit to get the HGAC treatment, beating out Wing. Overall the build quality feels solid and reliable, though the limited weapons and the lack of color separation on the neck and hands do leave a little to be desired. The new cape material will probably be a love-it-or-hate-it thing, but it does seem better than plain plastic. Either way, for anyone who's been waiting for the EW suits to get the HGAC treatment, this should make for a great addition to the collection. :-)
