Straight build

This kit is the HGCE Gouf Ignited (Heine Custom). It came out as part of the SEED series back in 2005 as an HG Gouf Ignited, and now, a whopping 21 years later, it's been upgraded to HGCE. Being a remodel 21 years in the making, the difference in quality is absolutely massive.

First off, compared to existing HGCE kits, this one gives the impression that the structural design as an HG kit itself has been upgraded. Unlike your typical HG-grade kits that just split arm and leg parts down the middle, advanced engineering has been applied here to minimize seam lines. The arms and shoulders are connected with single-piece parts that have no seam lines at all, and the legs use clever part splits to virtually eliminate seam lines entirely. The assembly process itself is a bit different from a regular HG as a result, but thanks to that, the straight build finish looks excellent.

The polycap-less joints have also matured nicely — they move smoothly without feeling overly tight, while still holding poses firmly. No matter what pose you put it in, it stays put. The articulation is top-tier HG level as well, and the skirt in particular is well designed so it doesn't interfere with hip joint movement. The waist also bends forward quite a bit, which really helps with dynamic poses. All in all, thanks to this well-engineered joint structure, posing this kit is an absolute blast.

On the appearance side, color separation has improved compared to the old HG. The previous HG Gouf Ignited was actually one of those kits with pretty poor color separation — the wings and weapons were especially bad. That's why the HG kit in the comparison photos above has partial painting applied. The HGCE released 21 years later is a clear improvement. Only the blue triangles on the backpack and the white areas on the small wings are covered with seals, and even those seals barely look out of place. On top of that, the excellent orange molded color really rounds things out, making the straight build quality come out at an A+ level.

For weapons, you get the standard Tempest Sword, Anti-Beam Shield, and two different forms of the Slayer Whip. The old HG's Tempest Sword came with separate pieces for the stored (shortened) and deployed (extended) states, but the HGCE has evolved into a single Tempest Sword with a built-in extend/retract gimmick. The Slayer Whip also comes with dedicated hands, and they lock onto the wrist securely for stable display.

It really feels like an HG kit that's suddenly jumped to a whole new level — the quality is more impressive and fresh than I expected. I really hope Bandai keeps this kind of parts engineering and gimmick approach going for all future HG kits.
