Rick Dom II

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining

The Rick Dom II (Zwei) from Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket has been released as an HGUC kit. Since it's based on the hefty Dom frame, it's quite the imposing figure among 1/144 scale kits. Compared to the original Rick Dom, the feet, legs, arms, and torso have all changed here and there, so in practice there's almost nothing shared between this and the Rick Dom.

The molded colors are on the darker side per the design specs, but the color quality is excellent. The downside is that those darker colors make gate marks pretty visible on a straight build — a basic problem that comes with the territory. The design colors are almost perfectly achieved through color separation, though oddly the pentagon on the rear is the one part you have to apply with a sticker.

For weapons, you get the Giant Bazooka as the main armament, a 90mm machine gun, and two Sturm Fausts. The Sturm Faust warheads are molded in red unlike other MG/HGUC kits, which makes them look a little nicer (^^). And just like the other Dom kits, you can store one heat saber on the back.

Articulation is pretty good overall — the front and side skirts in particular move well, giving the hip area solid range of motion. The polycaps are a bit on the weak side though, so if you bend the leg joints too hard they can pop right out. Like most Dom kits, knee articulation is better than it looks, and the arms have decent range of motion too — but as you move the arms around, the shoulder armor tends to fall off pretty easily. Out of all the MG/HGUC kits, I haven't seen shoulder joints as loose as this one's. T_T

There are a few minor drawbacks here and there, but overall this is a quality kit that more than lives up to the HGUC name. It also has a more refined, distinctly "Dom-like" feel compared to the 0083 Dom Tropen, which somehow comes across as a bit stubby and rough around the edges. Definitely worth recommending to anyone who loves a kit with great backpack presence ^^

* Due to a mis-assembly of the leg parts, the photos have been updated with retaken shots from 2022.
