Asshimar

Kit Review

Straight build +
panel lining

In 2005, the year of the Zeta movies, Zeta-related items have been
coming out one after another. Following the Marasai and Flying Armor, the next new Zeta item to arrive is none other than the Asshimar.

Honestly, if you don't have much background knowledge of Zeta or you're seeing the Asshimar for the first time, you might think it looks a bit odd. But for old-school fans who've been around since the Kongkong Comics era of the '80s, seeing each of these unique Zeta/ZZ mechanics get a new kit release is genuinely moving. The Asshimar is one of those kits. As one of the many transforming mechanics from the Zeta lineage, it features a distinctive transformation gimmick that turns it into a round donut shape.

First of all, the HGUC Asshimar gives you a strong sense that the development team put a lot more care into it than you'd expect. The meticulous color separation and seam line concealment that you wouldn't normally expect from an HGUC, molding even on the inside of the armor panels.. It's also one of the larger kits in the HGUC lineup, but the exterior quality is honestly on par with an MG. The thighs use single-piece armor to eliminate seam lines, the soles have individually separated verniers, and the arms use multi-layered part splits to reproduce the complex design colors.. there's something about this kit that's just not ordinary.

Articulation is a fairly average 90 degrees or so, but since it can be placed on the dedicated stand, you can pull off more natural action poses. Overall the joints are solid with no loose or floppy parts. The stand, which can display both MS and MA modes, can move the connection joint over 180 degrees in all directions — unlike other stands. So even with the kit mounted on the stand, you have quite a wide range of display angles to work with. Like recent stands tend to do, the Asshimar's stand also lets you store leftover parts in the base.

The Asshimar's greatest feature and highlight is its transformation gimmick. Even the hand parts — which at 1/144 scale would normally just be handled with a simple swap-out — are fully reproduced as a retractable mechanism, and the leg extension gimmick has an incredibly precise and well-calculated movement structure. The chest and body transformation gimmick is practically an art form. Full transformation is possible without removing any parts, and after transforming into MA mode, most of the transformed sections have their own dedicated locking points, so the transformation holds together very solidly. The satisfaction of that yellow donut shape snapping together perfectly with no gaps is just something else!!

This flawless transformation gimmick — which feels like it went through many rounds of trial and error during development — looks more refined than any other transforming kit released so far. It's as if it's showing us: this is what a truly seamless full transformation looks like! ^^

The hand parts have a somewhat unusual split structure, which seems effective for adding volume and hiding seam lines. However, the snap-fit durability is a bit weak — fiddle with them too much and they keep coming apart, which gets pretty annoying. Especially during transformation when you try to grab the hands and they just explode on you..;;; You're probably better off just gluing the hand parts together from the start. The beam rifle grip hand is assembled separately, and the detail and proportions are so good it almost feels like a resin piece. Having a separately optimized grip hand like this is so much better than just jamming a weapon into a hole in the palm. ^^

Being slightly larger and having all those internal gimmicks carefully reproduced, the part count is quite high and the price of ¥2000 is on the steeper side. That said, the quality feels so good that the price doesn't really feel like a complaint. When it was first announced I thought it'd be nothing special, but now that it's actually out, you can really feel just how much effort Bandai's development team put into this kit — way more than I imagined.

Sizeable bulk. Near-perfect color separation. Seam line concealment, solid joints, a unique stand, and the greatest transformation gimmick ever..
If you want to experience true hands-on satisfaction, don't hesitate — just go for it!
