HGUC RMS-106

Hi-Zack (E.F.F. Color)

Kit Review

Straight build +
panel lining

Out of nowhere, the HGUC Hi-Zack that came out exactly 5 years ago has been released in an E.F.F. spec. On the surface it looks like it was timed to coincide with the Zeta theatrical films, but the kit itself is 100% the same color variant. That said, they must've felt a bit embarrassed just changing the molded colors, so they've included a set of clear E.F.F. stickers. :-)

The previously released HGUC012 Hi-Zack was a Titans spec in a green-based color scheme, while this new E.F.F. spec comes in a lavender and blue-based color scheme. Looking at the colors alone, (thinking of the Mk-II Titans version or the GM Quel) the E.F.F. spec actually gives off more of a Titans coloring vibe. Strictly speaking, though, there's no real concept called "Titans coloring" — it's just that the Mk-II's Titans version happened to go with that deep blue concept, and the name kind of stuck. If you think about it, aside from the Titans Mk-II and GM Quel, that kind of color scheme isn't really the standard Titans look. :-)

Since the Hi-Zack is one of the relatively early kits in the HGUC lineup, the kit quality is neither terrible nor particularly great. The articulation is just so-so, and the knee and leg joints are a bit on the weak side, but since the body is light, it doesn't seem to be much of a real issue in practice. The color separation also has some lacking areas on the feet, forearms, shield, and so on, but for HGUC, it feels like they did their best given the constraints. The yellow cross on the shield is quite a focal point, so I did go ahead and paint just that part. :-)

Anyway, just looking at the color scheme, the blue and fresh E.F.F. Hi-Zack feels nicer than the somewhat murky, tannery-wastewater-esque coloring of the Titans Hi-Zack — though that's just personal taste talking. One thing though.. whether it's the mold condition or something else, the surface texture of the molded parts is a bit of an issue. It's not very smooth, and if you look up close, it's a little uneven and blotchy. It doesn't show up well in photos, but the mold condition doesn't seem to be in the best shape. In a way it might look a bit more matte, but either way, the molded surface isn't exactly silky smooth.

At the affordable price of ¥1,000, the merit of this kit is being able to build a Hi-Zack with decent quality and a unique color scheme..
I'll cautiously venture a prediction that an MG E.F.F. version might be coming out before long.. ^^
