Hot on the heels of the Hazel Custom, the Advanced Hazel — commonly known as the high-mobility type Hazel — has been released as an HGUC kit. Essentially, it's based on the Hazel Custom with the head antenna and backpack swapped out, plus the addition of a sub-arm unit, sole thruster units, and a reinforced shield Booster. The color scheme has also been changed to the deep blue known as Titans colors.
Given that background, this kit includes all of the original Hazel Custom's runners as-is, with just two additional runners for the high-mobility type added on. So you can actually build it as a regular Hazel Custom instead of the high-mobility version — it'd just be a Titans color Hazel Custom. :-)
With the high-heel thruster units added for the high-mobility configuration, it's grown about 1cm taller, and on top of that, having two large shield Boosters on its back makes it look even more imposing from behind. As a result, it's become quite a voluminous kit for 1/144 scale. The deep color scheme oozes that signature Titans charisma. Maybe because the colors are so different, it gives off a pretty distinct feel despite being a similar design to the original Hazel Custom.
The sub-arm unit added to the front skirt has a folding arm structure that can extend straight forward. At the end of the arm are three small articulated retractable claw fingers that can even grip a beam rifle — it's absolutely adorable ^^; The reinforced shield Booster added to the back has a unique design, but the problem is the color separation isn't great, so it looks a bit bare in a straight build. The kit used in this review has the gray and red sections of the reinforced shield Booster partially painted.
Interestingly, two hands for the Hazel Custom (rather than the high-mobility type) are included — these are meant to recreate the Hazel Custom's holding grip pose. If you bring in both of the high-mobility type's shield Boosters as well, you can pull off some pretty convincing poses with a combination of three shields.
Since the base kit was already such a high-quality, premium kit, the high-mobility Hazel delivers excellent quality as well — but it also inherits the same drawbacks ;;; The hand parts connect too loosely and basically require glue, the backpack verniers tend to fall off (looks like glue will be needed there too..), and the waist is weak enough that the body leans back slightly — all the same issues carry over. That said, the overall quality is good enough that these problems are easily overlooked ^^
Still, the joint strength that feels just a few percent short is a bit of a letdown. It's not loose enough to call it floppy, but you can't exactly call it stiff either.. It could've been made with solid, tight joints like the HGUC Mk-II, which is a shame. Especially for the high-mobility type, which has so much stuff hanging off it, there's even more of a need for firm joints to hold everything in place. It won't topple over on its own, but it does feel a bit unstable when posing in action poses.
Also, something I noticed in the Custom and again here with the high-mobility type — there are fixing points and structural design choices throughout the body that seem unnecessary at first glance. Even looking at the runners, you can spot system injection division blocks that seem completely unnecessary right now.. It feels like they're keeping other variations in mind.
Anyway, it's still a great kit that well deserves the label "high quality," and the increased volume and style more than justify the ¥1600 price tag. Add in that signature Titans color charisma on top of that, and it's the cherry on the cake!
