HGUC RGM-79

Powered GM

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining

The Powered GM suddenly showed up in the 0083 HGUC lineup after what felt like a long dry spell. It reuses some parts from the existing GM while about 60% of it is made up of new parts, making it a semi-variation kit.

The Powered GM's design is already pretty great to begin with, and the HGUC Powered GM's proportions are solid too. The base color with its subtle blue tint and the orange molded color are both fine.. and above all, the joint strength throughout the whole kit is impressively just right. You find yourself thinking it'd be great if every Gunpla had joints exactly this tight ^^

The articulation is good too, though the knees don't bend quite as far as the elbows which achieve a full fold with double joints. The joints themselves are fine, but the calves really get in the way.. ^^; The ankles are also structured so the rear section splits and folds up, meaning they bend forward quite a bit despite those big ankle guards. Overall, the great joint strength and excellent articulation work really well together, making this a kit that strikes dynamic action poses while being very easy to pose. (Which also means it's a great kit to review.. )

There are two notable features — first, the action-style left open hand that can bend 180 degrees forward and back. It looks great and has a very wide range of motion, doing a fantastic job of naturally supporting the rifle or bazooka held in the right hand.

Second is the piston-style inner frame molding inside the knee armor. I'd always assumed HGUC kits had no inner frames, but it seems like they've been quietly sneaking some in here and there for a while now. The knee armor cleverly split into four sections to eliminate seam lines is also impressive. The camera eye rendered in green clear parts is a nice touch too.

Among HGUC kits, the GM line in particular seems to consistently deliver clean, quality builds. Most of them are affordable, have solid joints, look great — they're simply ideal for collecting and perfect for group display shots.

A couple of minor gripes: the color separation around the beam saber mount is a bit off, and the front and rear hand parts don't hold together very well when gripping the bazooka.. but the positives more than make up for it.

All in all, it carries on the clean quality tradition of the HGUC GM line while taking things a step further — a really great kit that I absolutely love :-)
