Zaku I (Black Tri-Stars)

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + partial paint

As anyone could have predicted, the Black Tri-Stars color variant of the newly tooled HGUC Zaku I has been released.
It basically uses the same runners as the existing HGUC Zaku I with only the molded colors changed, so every structural characteristic of the kit is identical to the original Zaku I. For a more detailed review, please refer to the HGUC Zaku I review. That said, it seems they felt a little embarrassed just swapping the molded color, so they threw in some extra sticker seals. ^^;

Since the original HGUC Zaku I was already a top-quality modern kit, the Black Tri-Stars version likewise delivers excellent articulation, decent joint strength, and clean proportions. If anything, you could say the black color adds its own unique sense of menace.

However, since the Black Tri-Stars color scheme is somewhat different from the standard Zaku I, there is one spot where the color separation falls short — the top of the foot. The foot top, which should be black, came out in plain white plastic. So I did a simple partial paint job on just that area. Just like with the MG, it seems like the Black Tri-Stars Zaku series is just hard to nail perfectly when it comes to color separation..

Anyway, even though there isn't much that's changed, if you're interested in the more striking color scheme and the extra sticker seals, this is a high-quality kit worth recommending without hesitation. ^^
