Gaplant TR-5 (Hrairoo)

Kit Review

Straight build + partial painting + panel lining + stickers

The Gaplant TR-5 (Hrairoo) has been released as the 4th HGUC kit in the A.O.Z. (Advanced of Zeta) series. In terms of lore, this kit feels like a heavily armed variant of the Gaplant, and the kit itself is based on the HGUC Gaplant. Compared to the original Gaplant, the head, front and rear torso, shoulders, and weapons have all been significantly added to, and since the color scheme is based on the Hazel's colors, it has a completely different feel from the original Gaplant.

One thing to keep in mind with this A.O.Z. version is.. there are actually quite a few partial painting points. And they're the annoying yellow type too.. -_-; You can skip it if you want, but once you do it, it does look pretty sharp. The biggest appeal of this Hrairoo is its complex mechanical look and the kind of presence you wouldn't expect from an HGUC. There are a lot of parts so it takes a good while to build, the volume is great, and the time it takes to review and the number of photos needed are MG-level;;;

The original Gaplant was already a bit like this, but the Hrairoo with its even more complex armor has truly terrible articulation ^^; Arms and legs that can't even bend 90 degrees.. That said, at least putting it on a stand helps it look a bit more dynamic, and since kits with great silhouettes tend to look action-packed even with minimal posing, that's a saving grace.

The biggest downside of the Gaplant TR-5 (Hrairoo) is definitely all those weapons hanging off it — so many parts keep popping off during posing or transformation, which gets pretty annoying. One thing I really can't wrap my head around is the stand attachment point. The stand connector on the lower body is just too flimsy, so even when you put it on the stand it keeps tipping backwards. And when you transform it into MA mode and try to put it on the stand, there's this separate locking gimmick that doesn't quite do its job, so it just flops backwards again;; This kit really needs a stand, so having such a weak stand connection is a real buzzkill...

The transformation gimmick itself is based on the original Gaplant, but there are a lot of parts to swap in and out, and the transformation process is even more complex, so it actually takes quite a long time to do it properly. It feels like it takes several times longer than transforming the MG Zeta 2.0... In my case, from starting the transformation to getting it on the stand and taking photos, it took about an hour all up. On the plus side, once transformed the overall shape holds together fairly well, and it looks pretty damn impressive.

Anyway, this is a kit that punches well above its HGUC weight class — packed with detail, a big imposing size, and that complex setup and striking presence that's unique to AOZ kits. The iffy stand connection and the number of spot-painting points are a bit of a concern, but if you're a fan of the Hazel series, this is absolutely a must-have for your lineup.. ^^
