HGUC RX-79BD-2

Blue Destiny Unit 2

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining

Another new lineup has been added to the HGUC roster — the 08th MS Team series and the Blue Destiny series tied to it. With the recent release of the 08th MS Team DVD remaster box set, it feels like they're pushing the 08th MS Team across all kinds of product lines. And the first HGUC release in the 08th MS Team lineup isn't the Ground Type, the Ez8, or the Acguy — it's Blue Destiny Unit 2.

This mobile suit is originally from a video game, and its overall appearance is mostly the same as the Ground Type Gundam — the only difference in the design specs is the blue color scheme. There are Blue Destiny Units 1, 2, and 3, but Unit 2 came out before Unit 1.

The overall quality is very clean and satisfying to build, as you'd expect from a modern kit, with joints that are nicely tight and above-average articulation. Compared to other kits, a bit more attention has been paid to color separation, and the knee color separation gives it a slightly distinctive look. That said, there are a few spots where matching the design colors is tricky, and those are all handled with seals. One particularly interesting seal area is the elbow — the joint itself is entirely white, so without the seal it looks a bit off. Fortunately the seals have a clean finish and blend in well enough.

Blue molded color in particular tends to look really cheap or show wavy surface patterns, but the blue on this kit is genuinely beautiful. It's a more subtle and deep blue than it appears in photos — honestly the best blue molded color I've seen so far. When you finish building it, the first thing that comes to mind is "it's goooorgeous~" ^^;

There's also a design variant of Unit 2 with red shoulders, but it doesn't look like that version will get a separate release — if you want it, you'll probably just have to paint the shoulders yourself. As a kit to build some hype ahead of the Ground Type release, this is a solid, clean little gem.
