The HGUC Char's Counterattack lineup — one of Bandai's hidden cards — has finally kicked off. The first release is a bit of a surprise: the Jagd Doga. The Jagd Doga appears in two versions in the show — Gyunei's unit and Quess's unit — and both kits were released simultaneously. Of the two, the Gyunei custom was numbered first at #83.
Since the Jagd Doga is a large unit by design (or maybe it's just that all the Char's Counterattack MS are big to begin with..), it has a great presence for a 1/144 scale kit. The parts feel relatively large and voluminous too.
Overall quality is on par with recent HGUCs, showing nearly perfect color separation, parts breakdown, and proportions. Articulation is a bit average at around 90 degrees, but as is usually the case with big bulky suits, even a slight pose gives off a real sense of dynamism. Joint strength is generally fine, though the hip joints feel just a tad loose — the legs tend to spread apart a little too easily.
One notable thing is that, just like the HGUC Geara Zulu that came out not long ago, the HGUC Jagd Doga has an inner frame that covers nearly the entire body. Seeing MG-level inner frames gradually making their way into HGUCs makes me wonder if there's an overall quality upgrade happening — though of course it seems to only apply to larger 1/144 scale kits for now. Either way, it's an interesting development.
The quality of the inner frame varies quite a bit though — the arms have a frame that's nearly on par with an MG, while the torso and legs are basically just bare skeletons. That said, the mold detail inside the skirt armor and leg armor panels is really well done — almost MG-level. Looking at the interior mold detail, it's definitely a step up from older HGUCs. It feels like they're slowly trying to bring some of the MG's appeal down to the HGUC level.. though of course MG quality keeps getting better too, so I guess that makes sense.
One fun option is the funnels — all 6 are included in their deployed form, similar to the Sazabi's funnels. And to recreate the funnel launch scene, 2 clear rods are included. These are the exact same rods that came with the MG Strike Freedom Gundam Full Burst Mode kit and the MG Hi-Nu Gundam. You can bend them by hand to hold a pose, and they're meant to be cut into thirds so you can mount all 6 funnels. The end result, as you can see in the photos above, looks pretty convincing.
Anyway, overall this kit is super clean in quality, as you'd expect from a modern HGUC — proportions, color separation, functionality, there's really nothing major to complain about. The somewhat limited articulation can be forgiven given the sheer size of the thing.. If you've had your eye on the Jagd Doga, go ahead and grab it without any hesitation~ ^_^
