RX-78 G30th Premium Gold ver.

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the HG 30th Anniversary First Gundam Premium Gold limited edition, released to commemorate Gundam's 30th anniversary. Unlike the Club MG Gundam, it's not actually plated with real gold — it's a gold-plated version done the usual way, with a silver base coat topped with clear yellow.

First and foremost, the gold plating quality is generally decent, but if you look closely you'll occasionally spot areas where the color isn't quite uniform. That said, since the kit is small it's not too noticeable, and when you step back a bit the brilliant shine makes it look pretty luxurious. ^^

Being a plated kit, the joints are a bit stiffer than usual — same as always — but it's a relief that the gate marks are barely visible, whether that's thanks to the original kit's well-placed gate locations or not.

The Premium Gold ver. comes with a special logo plate commemorating Gundam's 30th anniversary, and the gold plating on this logo plate is actually really nice — it almost feels like a solid gold ingot. Displayed alongside the kit, the combined sparkle makes for quite an impressive shelf presence.

It's a bit modest for something meant to celebrate Gundam's 30th anniversary, but since gold-plated kits are pretty rare, I'd say it still has its own collectible value. It was somewhat overshadowed when Club MG later released an ultra-high-quality MG First 2.0 plated in 24k pure gold, but even so, a gold-plated version of the First Gundam is still a rare sight, and that alone makes it worthwhile. :-)
