HG RX-78-2

Gundam G-30th. 1:1 ver. Shizuoka

Kit Review

Straight Build
+ Seals

The 1:1 Gundam that was displayed in Odaiba, Tokyo in 2009 was re-exhibited in Shizuoka in 2010. It was shown alongside the Hobby Museum in front of Higashi-Shizuoka Station, and unlike the Odaiba version, a beam saber was added to the right arm along with additional decaling. This kit is a limited edition HG First Gundam sold exclusively at the Shizuoka venue — and it's one I picked up myself by visiting the event in person~ :-)

The RG Gundam released not too long ago was actually modeled after the Shizuoka display version, sharing the same white and gray color scheme and decaling. This kit is an HG, not an RG, but to recreate that same look, it comes with RG Gundam-style seals that weren't included in the Odaiba version. It also includes a beam saber and a melted structure effect to match the displayed pose, and since the angle of the beam saber grip is quite specific, a brand-new mold hand part has been added. On the flip side, weapons like the beam rifle, shield, bazooka, and Gundam Hammer have all been left out.

As you can see, this one has just a bit more collector's value than the Odaiba version — even just applying the seals without any panel lining gives it a noticeably more premium feel. Sure, the weapons are missing, but they're not really needed for display purposes anyway, and the addition of some newly molded parts does give it its own appeal.

In practice, placing the RG Gundam on the stand does feel a bit closer to the real thing, but even so, I think this is a pretty solid limited edition to commemorate the Shizuoka exhibition. :-)
