Police Zaku

Kit Review

Straight build + Seals

The Police Zaku has been released as the second HG kit from "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury." It's not quite as radical a design as the Ziku Axis, but it still comes across as a pretty fresh take on the Zaku. The design feels closer to a blue Zaku or the Kämpfer than a standard Zaku.

Unlike the HG Ziku Axiswhich had tons of tiny parts like an RG, this one comes out as a typical HG kit with parts broken down at a reasonable size. The assembly feel is a bit stiff — similar to the HGCE SEED Freedom kits — and the polycap-less joints give it that same kind of resistance. The notably chunky thighs are a defining feature that gives it a unique look, but they're so thick that the hip joint range of motion ends up being limited, making it a bit tricky to pose.

On top of that hip joint restriction, the overall articulation is about average. Dynamic poses are tough, but it handles basic stances and a kneeling pose well enough. As for weapons, you get a Zaku Machine Gun, Heat Hawk, and shield + electric baton — all of which lock onto the palm peg, so there's no grip issue. One thing I'd flag is that there are a lot of seals to apply, and the adhesive is a bit weak, so you'll want to be extra careful when sticking them on (especially the ones you have to wrap around curved surfaces...).

So it's a fresh new Zaku with a unique look and proportions. The stiff joints are a little worrying in terms of potential breakage, and the hip articulation is a bit disappointing, but the overall sculpt turned out really nicely. Either way, if you're into this new style of Zaku or enjoyed the Ziku Axis, this seems like a kit well worth checking out. :-)
